The most important thing in a home, beyond the size, color, layout, or number of rooms, is security. Who wants to live in a mansion or the house of their dreams but feel unprotected? Unfortunately, thieves are increasingly using strategies to gain access to our homes. That is why, in addition to an alarm system or similar, we should also keep some tricks up our sleeves. One of the most common entry points, although it may not seem like it, is the garage door. However, there are simple and inexpensive tricks that can help strengthen the security of doors. One very simple trick is using a zipper, which you can get at a very good price at Dollar Tree.

Its function is to reinforce the emergency release cable, which allows the door mechanism to disengage. Thieves use a simple object like a hook-shaped wire hanger, which they slide along the cable until they find a tension area, perfect for pulling and unlocking the mechanism. In case there was a zipper, this would prevent the cable from releasing the garage door when pulled, so the door could not be opened. In cases like elderly people, it could be a disadvantage, but it is a useful trick for emergencies.

Home Security

What is more important than the security of our homes? I would say nothing. It is of little use to live in the house of your dreams if you are constantly worried that someone might gain access to your home. That is why it is most advisable to have a security system tailored to the needs of each individual, family, and dwelling. However, unfortunately, thieves also study the weaknesses of houses, and if there is a way in, they will find it. In fact, garage doors are often very common weak points, so it doesn’t hurt to know some security tricks.

The zipper trick

There is a quite practical and cheap trick to reinforce the security of your garage door. To implement it, you will only need a zip tie, which you can find in stores like Dollar Tree or any other of your preference. It is worth mentioning that the better the quality of the zip tie, the more effective the trick will be. Once you have the zip tie, you will have to thread it through the hole where the emergency release cable of the door is connected. Make a loop between that hole and the smaller one located just above it, and tighten the zip tie as much as you can.

The hanger trick

This is the trick that thieves use to release the door and be able to enter manually. They use a wooden block or something similar to create a gap at the top of the door, between the door and the motor. Then they slide a hook-shaped hanger down the cable until they feel tension in it, and pull it. And voilà, the door mechanism is completely unlocked and the door can be opened manually with little effort.

What is the zipper for?

In case there is a zipper on the emergency release cable, it will prevent the cable from coming loose from the door no matter how much it is pulled. If you ever need to use the cable, just cut the zipper and you can put another one back on afterward. Experts recommend using a high-quality or industrial zipper to ensure it does not break. Another trick would be to reduce the amount of visible cable by attaching it to the door arm, but make sure it does not interfere with the opening and closing of the door.
