According to the information published by MacRumors, Meta is testing a new feature for the WhatsApp app through which the number of messages that can be sent to contacts who do not respond will be restricted. This new functionality would not affect personal accounts or active users, but rather business accounts. Its goal is to regulate the mass arrival of spam messages that come through instant messaging, reducing the number of one-sided interactions.

This measure is part of Meta’s approach to ensuring user privacy and online security. The company has not yet made details public; sources indicated that initial tests will be conducted in several countries, and based on the results obtained, it will decide whether to implement it globally or not.

WhatsApp

Nowadays, very few people are unfamiliar with the WhatsApp application. Available for all operating systems, it is an instant messaging application owned by Meta, through which users can receive text messages, photos, videos, voice notes, documents, and also make calls over an Internet connection. It is completely free and requires a mobile network or WiFi to function.

New WhatsApp feature

According to information published by MacRumors, Meta is developing a new feature for the instant messaging application WhatsApp. It is still in the testing phase, but both users and technology experts have already expressed their curiosity. Meta itself has made its line of work public, aiming to strengthen privacy mechanisms within the application and give users control over unwanted messages.

What does the new tool consist of?

The novelty consists of an update that will impose monthly limits on accounts that send repeated messages without receiving a response, a common practice among commercial or spam accounts. According to the published information, the system would be able to distinguish between contacts that respond and those that do not, so that only ignored messages will count toward the monthly limit. It is worth noting that it will not affect personal accounts or active conversations, but will be directed towards business accounts, at least for now.

When will it come into effect?

So far, Meta has not provided any further information or set a launch date, but sources close to the company say that it will first be implemented in commercial accounts in a trial phase in some countries, and depending on the results obtained, it may be extended to other countries or not.

What does Meta say about it?

There are still many details that remain unclear, such as the exact number of messages allowed or associated technical details. What Meta has mentioned, however, is the implementation of a strategy to improve the WhatsApp app, with the aim of strengthening its security policies and reducing spam. It is one of the most used apps worldwide, with more than 2 billion active users globally, which compels the company to improve it, making it more effective, practical, and above all, secure. If this measure works as the company hopes, and consequently its use expands to the rest of the world, it could become one of the platform’s largest updates in terms of message control.
