The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a new massive vehicle recall in the United States. This time it affects the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota, which is recalling approximately 1,025,000 vehicles. The reason is related to a malfunction in the operation of the rear camera of the vehicles, which is not working correctly. This recall affects models including Lexus, Toyota Camry, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Prius, Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Sienna, Toyota Venza, Lexus RX, Lexus NX, Lexus GX, Lexus LS, and Lexus IS. The model years are yet to be confirmed, but the company has confirmed that the corresponding repairs will be available starting in December, consisting of an ECU software update for the monitoring system.

Massive Toyota Recall

Massive vehicle recalls are not new in the United States. Several companies have had to face them this year 2025, with varying degrees of impact. The latest announcement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) features the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota, which is facing a recall of approximately 1,025,000 vehicles in the United States. According to the announcement, the affected models include:

Toyota:

  • BZ4X.
  • Camry.
  • Corona.
  • Crown Signia.
  • Grand Highlander.
  • Highlander.
  • Land Cruiser.
  • Mirai.
  • Prius.
  • RAV4.
  • Sienna.
  • Venza.

Lexus:

  • Lexus GX.
  • Lexus LC.
  • Lexus LS.
  • Lexus LX.
  • Lexus NX.
  • Lexus RX.
  • Lexus RZ.
  • Lexus TX.

What is the reason for the recall?

According to the announcement from the NHTSA and Toyota, the problem is related to the ECU software of the monitoring system. One of the key parts of the parking assistance system is causing the rearview cameras to not display images correctly, and sometimes not at all. This constitutes a violation of federal safety regulations that require functional backup cameras in all modern vehicles.

What now?

It is still pending for Toyota to publish the specific years of the affected vehicles, which include Toyota and Lexus models, totaling 1,025,000 units. What has been confirmed is that starting in December, the corresponding repair will be available, which will consist of a software update, and both affected Toyota and Lexus owners are included. Affected owners will be notified and will have to visit an authorized dealership where the repair will be carried out completely free of charge. If you do not want to wait to receive the notification to know if your vehicle is affected, you can check it on the official website by following these steps:

  1. Visit Toyota.com/recall or go to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.
  2. Enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) – a 17-character code located on the dashboard near the windshield on the driver’s side.
  3. Follow the instructions to see if your vehicle is affected by this or any other active recall.

Impact of massive vehicle recalls

These types of events are not exclusive to Toyota, but virtually all vehicle manufacturers face them. This is the case for Jeep, Fiat, BMW, or Ford. In particular, the latter has set the record for massive recalls in 2025 in the United States, taking the hardest hit. Massive vehicle recalls not only pose an obvious short-term problem, but also affect the credibility, trust, safety, and professionalism of the vehicle brand in question, making their avoidance one of the brand’s priorities.
