It is not news that the United States has declared a trade war on practically the entire planet. More specifically, Republican President Donald Trump, with his new tariff measures, is destabilizing the stock markets. The White House spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, explained in her statements that the goal of these tariff measures is to improve the lives of the American people and workers. However, Yale Budget Lab claims that citizens will end up paying an extra $2,400 a year due to these tariffs and their consequent inflation and increase in prices in the country.

For his part, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick stated that, although the new tariff percentages take effect on August 1, they are not closing the door on negotiations with the affected countries. Some of the countries that will see their exports to the United States affected by tariffs will be Mexico, Canada, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil, among others.

Trump’s tariff policy

According to Trump, “Our taxpayers have been scammed for over 50 years, but that will not happen ever again.” These were the first statements with which he justified the implementation of his tariff policy in April 2025. It was then that he announced a general tariff of 10% on all products imported to the United States, with specific percentages for each country, reaching a total of 60. After dropping this bombshell, some countries negotiated, but China retaliated, which forced Trump to take a step back. Currently, the relations between China and the United States walk on the fine line of the tariff agreement signed by both countries, while the rest of the countries are in open war with Trump.

New tariff percentages

On August 1st, the new tariff percentages imposed by Trump will come into effect. After reaching agreements with some countries, such as China, those that have not managed to understand the Republican President are seeing how the price of their exports to the United States increases. Karoline Leavitt, spokesperson for the White House, explained the main objectives of these tariff measures, “The president and his trade team want to achieve the best agreements for the American people and the American worker.”

However, many experts view this tariff policy as a tantrum from a small child that threatens and pressures other countries to yield to President Trump’s demands. Some of the countries that will be affected starting August 1st include Canada, Mexico, Japan, and the European Union, among many others.

Which countries are facing the new tariffs?

Many countries are affected, but among them are:

  • Brazil: 50%.
  • Cambodia: 36%.
  • Bangladesh: 35%.
  • Canada: 35%.
  • European Union: 30%.
  • Mexico: 30%.
  • Japan: 25%.
  • South Korea: 25%.

Which products will see their prices changed?

According to experts, the new tariffs will affect the prices of products such as coffee, appliances, footwear, textiles, and other imported goods. Additionally, we cannot overlook the 50% tariff that already exists on copper, which will have a direct impact on the automotive industry and construction. Despite the government’s justification of the tariffs as a ‘protective’ measure for the American people and workers, the reality is that, according to data from Yale Budget Lab, citizens will pay up to $2,400 extra each year as a consequence of this new measure. For his part, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick stated, “Nothing prevents countries from continuing to talk with us after August 1st”.

Will these new tariffs be another bluster from President Trump to get the rest of the countries to pay attention? Or will he stand firm on a decision that clearly affects the global economic market, and the economy of his own people?

Farewell to Shein and Temu; they are withdrawing from the United States due to Trump’s tariffs!
