Neither Costco nor Aldi - the supermarket already using advanced AI in its stores to improve shopping and benefit employees

The market for chain stores in the United States, although it varies, has always had some clear leaders: Walmart, Costco, Target and Aldi. However, Walmart has rarely lost the throne. With its latest bet, it has taken a step forward, generating a substantial advantage over its competitors. Walmart has opted for the use of AI technology in different versions.

On the one hand, the AI-driven shift management system. On the other hand, it integrated a real-time automatic translation system that works in 44 languages, and also a conversational generative AI, which solves frequent doubts, and offers step-by-step instructions, helping workers to carry out their tasks. In addition, Walmart does not intend to destroy jobs with the implementation of AI, but to complement it with human tasks. This has been achieved through the integration of an internal AI platform called Element.

An example of this is the incorporation of VizPick, a tool through which RFID technology is combined with augmented reality, used to carry out inventories in the clothing sections. Walmart’s choice of AI is not limited to retail stores, but has also incorporated it into its headquarters through the My Assistant platform.

Walmart & AI

Walmart is one of the most famous department store chains in the United States. With a worldwide presence, it is the leader par excellence over its competitors. Walmart has been able to adapt to the needs of customers while adapting to new technological advances in an outstanding way. Last June 2025, it announced the new measures it has taken, leaving its main competitors, Costo and Aldi, in check. Walmart has opted to introduce AI in multiple sectors of its organization, improving the user experience of both customers and workers, in turn generating benefits for the company.

Technological innovations with AI at Walmart

Walmart wanted to benefit the experience of its employees. In this way, more than 1.5 million employees have been able to improve their efficiency and offer a better service thanks to the technological innovations implemented by the company. Several measures have been implemented, such as the use of an internal AI that contains a shift management system. This tool is able to reduce scheduling time from 90 minutes to 30 minutes, reducing costs and time. It is able to offer clear and well-structured workflows. On the other hand, Walmart has opted for fluid and clear communication with its customers. That is why it has incorporated a simultaneous translation system capable of translating 44 languages.

Specific uses of AI

One of Walmart’s highlights came with the implementation of an internal AI platform, called Element. The brand is committed to merging technology and talent, without replacing workers with machines, but rather combining them to improve capabilities. This makes employees feel more competent and prepared.
Another innovation is the implementation of the VizPick tool: augmented reality and RFID technology combined. This tool is used in particular to carry out inventories in the newly textile plant, thanks to the visual interface that facilitates the process: it indicates which shelves need to be replenished, specifying the product that is needed.

What is Walmart up to?

Walmart has been adept at combining and meeting the needs of both the consumer and the business. With the advances made so far, and those announced last June, Walmart is being able to offer a unique user experience that, at least for the time being, none of its competitors offer. This ability to understand the needs of consumers has translated into profits for the company, once again positioning it as the number one establishment of choice for U.S. citizens.
