If you own a BMW or a Toyota Supra, you should know that your vehicle could be at risk and also pose a danger. On September 26, 2025, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and BMW of North America issued a statement warning consumers that around 200,000 vehicles could experience a fire due to a corrosive starter relay, initiating an automotive recall in the United States. Affected vehicles include the BMW Z4, BMW 330i, BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW 530i, BMW 430i, BMW 230i models, as well as Toyota Supra models manufactured by BMW.

Both the company and the agency recommend parking the car on the street and away from buildings to avoid problems due to the fire risk. It is also recommended to check the vehicle identification number (VIN) to see if your vehicle is on the list of affected vehicles, while waiting to receive a formal notification from the company on November 14. You can also contact BMW customer service or download the SaferCar app to stay informed about recalls. Although BMW has not received any reports of injuries related to this defect, Top Class Actions continues to track this incident.

BMW´s massive recall

On September 26, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and BMW of North America issued a statement alerting of a massive recall affecting nearly 200,000 vehicles across the United States. The reason is related to a failure in a corrosive starter cable, which poses a fire risk. Many models have been affected by this recall, such as:

  • BMW 2019-2022 Z4.
  • BMW 2019-2021 330I.
  • BMW 2020-2022 X3.
  • BMW 2020-2022 X4.
  • BMW 2020-2022 530I.
  • BMW 2021-2022 430I (both standard and convertible).
  • BMW 2022 230I.

Additionally, the 2020-2022 Toyota Supra models, which were manufactured by BMW, have also been affected, totaling 1,469 vehicles.

Where is the problem with these vehicles?

According to the report issued by the NHTSA itself and BMW of North America, the problem lies in the fact that the engine start relay can corrode, leading to overheating and a subsequent short circuit that can result in a fire. “Owners should park outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until they confirm that their vehicle is not subject to a recall or that their vehicle will be repaired.” The problem is even more serious than it seems, as the corroded relay can catch fire whether it is parked or in motion.

What is BMW’s next step?

According to the company itself, the recall will have to be carried out progressively due to the shortage of replacement parts. Starting November 14, 2025, letters will begin to arrive notifying customers officially if their car is at risk and included in this massive recall. However, in the statement, they encourage consumers to check their vehicle’s verification number on the NHTSA website to see if their vehicle is on the list of affected vehicles. Additionally, they can also contact BMW customer service by phone (800-525-7417), or the NHTSA through the vehicle safety hotline (888-327-4236). If you want to stay informed about the mass recalls currently taking place in the country, you can also download the SaferCar app.

Is BMW facing a class action lawsuit?

At the moment, no. To date, BMW states that it has not received any reports of injuries related to this defect. However, these types of incidents often bring affected individuals together, and such legal actions are usually carried out, so the website Top Class Actions is and will be monitoring any updates in this regard.

Although this is not good news for BMW or Toyota, the award for the company with the highest number of massive recalls in 2025 undoubtedly goes to Ford. Read more about their latest recalls!
