It's official - Florida raises minimum wage starting in September - find out what the increase will be and how it will impact millions of workers

The IRS confirms that it will not send out $2,000 checks in December, affecting millions who were hoping for economic relief

Starting September 30, 2025, workers in Florida will have good news. Thanks to Amendment 2 of the State Constitution approved in 2020, the minimum wage will increase and will continue to do so automatically each year. A measure voted on in the 2020 general elections, from which the minimum wage in Florida will go from $13 for now to $14. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) supports this new measure and applies it to those workers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which includes both full-time and part-time workers.

Currently, the federal minimum wage in the United States is $7.25 per hour, and it has remained that way since 2009, without changes. Despite the rising cost of living due to relentless inflation, workers have to manage their expenses with the same amount of income. This is why states have decided to act unilaterally, adjusting the minimum wage as much as possible, offering competitive and fair salaries for workers.

Federal minimum wage

It is well known around the world the delicate economic situation that the United States is going through. Although Trump is doing everything possible to pretend there is economic and political power, the truth is that the country’s economy has its citizens immersed in a daily challenge. Inflation, especially derived from the tariff policy imposed by Trump, has led to an increase in the cost of living across the country.

This could be sustainable – within certain limits – if the minimum wage for workers also increased, making it more competitive. However, the reality is that the federal minimum wage in the United States has not been modified since 2009. The figure is almost hilarious, as it is set (seemingly permanently) at $7.25 an hour. Do you think that figure is a symptom of a country with a booming economy? Allow me to doubt it.

Florida takes action

The residents of Florida who are currently working should mark the following date on their calendar: September 30, 2025. After the 2020 general elections, 60% of voters supported the proposal to raise the minimum wage from $13 to $14. This measure is part of Amendment 2 of the State Constitution approved that same year, which proposes an automatic increase that started in 2021 and will last until 2026, reaching $15.

Florida raises its minimum wage

This increase is backed by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), and it will apply to those workers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which includes both part-time and full-time workers. The goal of this measure is to protect the state’s workers from the impact of the economic situation the country is going through. From 2020 until now, 2025, Florida’s minimum wage has increased from $10 per hour to $14 per hour, reaching $15 per hour next year 2026. For their part, those workers who also receive tips will receive a cash wage of $10.98 per hour, starting on the same day as the expected increase, September 30.

The state acts on its own

Relying on data and not on opinions, it can be observed how the U.S. economy is not doing as well as some would like to believe. With a federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, the state of Florida understands that it is completely unfeasible to cope with the cost of living. Therefore, it has decided to take action and make use of local legislation to adjust the salaries of state workers. The aim is to protect workers, as well as to offer a competitive and dignified wage for their work, which also helps them combat the effects of inflation and the substantial increase in the cost of living.
