Two years ago, Lamborghini from the Sant’Agata Bolognese house wanted to get on the electric vehicle bandwagon and announced the launch of its own 100% electric design for 2028. However, after a drop in demand and the disinterest shown by customers of supercars and luxury cars in this type of model, the anticipated Lamborghini Lanzador design delayed its launch date by one year, to 2029, and there are still doubts as to whether its original design will be the one seen in the market.
This information was provided by Stephan Winkelmann, the CEO of Lamborghini, who suggested in an interview with CarExpert that it has not yet been decided whether it will be a 100% electric model or a plug-in hybrid, like the Urus. Sports car manufacturers have shifted their focus to plug-in hybrids, like the BMW M5 or the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.
Lamborghini
Founded in 1963, Lamborghini started as a tractor factory established by Ferruccio Lamborghini in Sant’Agata Bolognese. It specializes in the manufacturing of super sports cars and luxury vehicles. This Italian brand is known worldwide for its quality and innovative design.
Electric vehicle industry
Electric vehicles date back to the late 19th century, when the first prototypes appeared in Europe and the United States, thanks to Ányos Jedlik and Gustave Trouvé. However, it was not until the 1990s that they began to gain more prominence, and various brands started to commercialize them. It was with the arrival of Tesla in 2008 that the market began to revolutionize and take off.
Along with the innovation of a new vehicle model, and the need and commitment of companies to reduce their CO2 emissions responsible for the greenhouse effect, electric cars became a very attractive option. However, neither the necessary infrastructure to support an EV nor the sales price of the same have thrilled buyers, leading to a considerable drop in their popularity, as well as their sales volume. This is why manufacturing companies prefer to play it safe, launching hybrid models in the market.
Lamborghini Lanzador
In the midst of the wave of popularity of electric cars, Lamborghini did not want to be left behind. This is why two years ago they announced the launch of their own 100% electric design; the Lamborghini Lanzador. It was a 2+2 coupe model with the shape of a raised supercar. It was then that they marked the launch date for 2028 on the calendar.
However, nothing has been heard about this design since, only that its launch has been delayed by a year, to 2029. Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini, explained in an interview with CarExpert that the market for electric vehicles has fallen significantly. There has been a recorded decline in interest from users of supercars and luxury cars for this type of model. He also hinted that it has not yet been decided whether the model will remain 100% electric or will become a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
From electric car to plug-in hybrid vehicle
There are many high-end vehicle manufacturers that have chosen not to go all-in on electric models and have opted for plug-in hybrids instead. This can be seen in models like the BMW M5 and the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. If Lamborghini ultimately decides that the Lanzador will be a hybrid, it would be an interesting bet that could generate competition against existing models from brands like Ferrari or Porsche. Lamborghini’s intention is to launch a daily-use car and move away from the notion of an exclusive supercar.
