Education and childhood learning have been forced to seek a new approach that allows for transformation, thus enabling more innovative teaching. In this context, the organization Educo highlights the need to replace the traditional educational method when teaching mathematics, one of the subjects that poses the greatest challenge for students. To prevent this aversion to numbers, experts propose modifying the teaching method toward something more modern, replacing the textbook with educational technology, augmented relief, and the creation of mathematical challenges useful for everyday application. This new educational method is based on practical and meaningful learning: combining cooking and mathematics as a natural laboratory, it can be one of the options.

Real aspplication of Maths

There is no doubt that one of the subjects that often causes the most problems for students is mathematics. The main problem is that they do not see a connection between all the theory in their books and their everyday life. That is why the experts at Educo believe it is necessary to change the approach by applying the mathematical concepts taught in the classroom to the real world of the students. It is easier to understand when they can visualize how numbers, formulas, and calculations are used in their daily life. This is how they manage to understand, through practice, the usefulness of the subject’s content beyond seeing it as a nightmare.

Change in the teaching approach: goodbye to textbooks

Educo experts provide a series of elements that can help us teach mathematics at home in a simple and direct way:

Apply them to the real world

Everything that involves applying them to daily life and real examples that students can extrapolate helps increase interest in the subject.Use technology. According to Educo, both social media and the internet can be good allies. It is easier to understand statistics by observing those generated from social media followers, as well as including videos and virtual reality with video games focused on mathematics.

Learning communities

Channels or learning communities can be created in which students share their experiences through social media.

Generate challenges

Mathematical challenges can be created that have real-world applications and stimulate their desire to learn.

Connecting mathematics with other disciplines

Mathematics is related to many subjects. For example, history can be explained through graphs, or biology with graphs and calculations. We also find many examples of mathematical applications in nature, such as symmetry or the number PI

Cooking

How can mathematics be related to cooking? By preparing their favorite recipe, they can learn to calculate cooking times, the weight of ingredients, or the temperature for cooking. They will also learn the importance of geometric shapes such as cones (with a funnel, for example), rectangles (with food boxes), or circles (with pots).

Children and adolescents face a reality that is completely different from what existed just 10 years ago. Their technological understanding is almost superior to their ability to analyze the contents of a book. That is why educational techniques and methodologies must adapt not only to their needs but also to the wide range of resources available to modernize teaching, which can make it a much more enjoyable, practical, and effective experience.
