By now, who hasn’t seen – or at least heard of – the movie Pretty Woman? Considered one of the most romantic movies in the history of cinema, it is a love story starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. With millions of views and a world-renowned soundtrack, it is one of the most recognized gems in the world of cinema. However, as has happened to other famous movies, it has a continuity error that few viewers have noticed.

At around the 32nd minute of the film, in the breakfast scene, the mistake is more than visible. Julia Roberts starts the scene eating a croissant, and then reappears, this time with a pancake in her hand. The director claimed that this is a minor flaw, as he chose the final shots for acting preference. Have you ever noticed this detail?

Pretty Woman

Released 35 years ago, Pretty Woman is considered one of the classics of romantic cinema worldwide. Starring none other than Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, it tells the story of a prostitute who is hired by a businessman during a trip to Los Angeles. Her job is only as a companion, but finally, they end up falling in love and starring in one of the most romantic movies in history. Despite its success, there have been many opinions in favor of the film but against the message it sends. Even Roberts has recently declared her position against how the film plays down prostitution and treats it as something “banal”, according to her.

Cinematographic errors

If we look carefully, there are many movies that have errors in their recordings, but passed by completely unnoticed. This is the case of Pretty Woman, which despite being one of the most played movies, few people have noticed this failure. If we fast forward the recording to the 32nd minute, we will arrive at the famous breakfast scene. It is here where you can clearly see the gaffe.

At the beginning of the scene, Vivian (Julia Roberts), is eating a croissant while talking to Lewis (Richard Gere). By cut, in the next scene she no longer has a croissant, but a bitten pancake, which also does not correspond to the bite she had taken. Very small details that can make the viewer’s focus wander away from the plot. Garry Marshall, the film’s director, explained that he had chosen the last scene for acting preference, so the continuity error would be a lesser evil.

Curiosities about the movie

Not only is it one of the most famous films in history, but it is also the project that catapulted Julia Roberts to the top of the Hollywood industry.  In 1991, she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy, awarded by the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Both the film and its soundtrack (performed by Roy Orbison), were also critically acclaimed.

You’re looking forward to watching it again, aren’t you? Well, it’s available on multiple streaming platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, HBO Max, among others. This last month the rumor has circulated that a second part 35 years later was being prepared. This news caused a furor among fans of the film, who even saw how the poster of the new movie was leaked. However, I am sorry to say that this is a hoax and that it is not true. Even the poster that can be seen4 in social networks is made with artificial intelligence, in order to give more credibility to the rumor.

Despite being one of the most beloved films by fans of romantic comedy, it is almost better that there is no sequel. Without trying to take away one iota of its success, we cannot overlook the fact that many of the themes that the film deals with are quite outdated, and that nowadays, a film that romanticizes prostitution in such a way would not have a quarter of the acceptance it had more than 30 years ago.
