It is not advisable to follow advice from random people on social media. It is easy to record a video giving advice, but you never know what may be behind it. However, there are verified profiles of professionals who put their knowledge at the service of their followers and can help with advice at specific moments. This is the case of psychologist Silvia Severino, who through her TikTok profile explains different aspects related to psychology, giving viral advice.

In this case, she talks about the aspects of our personal lives that we should or should not share with the rest of the world. It’s not about putting at risk the trust one has with their close environment, but rather about protecting emotional well-being, self-esteem, and above all, confidentiality. In a world that revolves around social media with profiles that claim to be transparent, but are not, as individuals we must protect ourselves from that overexposure and safeguard our privacy.

Personal relationships and communication

Human beings are gregarious and communicative by nature. We have a need to create bonds with those closest to us, sharing our experiences, worries, joys, or thoughts. This is what has made the development of language and civilization possible. However, there is no need to be an open book for everyone. The benefits of a therapy session and the bonds that are created between people who place their full trust in one another are undeniable. Nevertheless, it is not necessary for everything that goes through our minds, everything we do, feel, or plan to be shared.

This is explained by psychologists, specifically the psychologist specialized in child and adolescent mental health, Silvia Severino. Through her TikTok profile, she shares content related to psychology, emotional management, and relationships. One of her most well-known videos is the one where she gives 6 tips that go viral. List the topics we should be more private about, in order to preserve our emotional integrity and to avoid future problems.

What aspects of our life should be private according to psychology?

Severino lists 6 aspects that we need to pay more attention to regarding privacy and personal relationships. It’s not about being distrustful, but about preserving the information that is valuable and important to us.

  • Future plans. Haven’t you found that you don’t want to share a plan until it finally happens for fear of it being jinxed? It’s a common thought. Severino states that “not everyone wants to see you shine,” so airing our plans might lead someone to sabotage them or demotivate you.
  • Personal weaknesses. We cannot live thinking that our close circle will betray us, but it is advisable to understand that circumstances change, and who was a confidant one day might use your fears, worries, or most intimate confessions against you today.
  • Failures. Not everyone sees a failure as a learning experience, so sharing those moments might lead someone to intend to humiliate you for it.
  • Your next steps. Severino suggests that it’s better for actions to speak for themselves. If you have projects, do them in privacy and share them only when they yield good results.
  • Personal secrets. Don’t share them with just anyone. According to Severino, “a true wise person knows this: whoever tells everything exposes only themselves”.
  • How much you earn and how you do it. Your income or standard of living can influence the type of people you have around you.

What is achieved with this?

Severino does not intend to alert or suggest that our relationships should be based on distrust. Rather, it is about knowing how to choose the way we relate to the different people in our environment. He wants to convey the importance of working on emotional intelligence and prudence, knowing how to set boundaries and wisely choosing our close circle.
