For lovers of astronomical phenomena, September will be a date to keep in mind. If you are one of them, grab a pen and paper and take note. For the second time this year, 2025 will witness one of the most striking and beautiful phenomena to observe on Earth. It is a total lunar eclipse, where thanks to the lunar perigee and atmospheric refraction, we will be able to enjoy the so-called Blood Moon.
The exact date is September 7, 2025. However, I have bad news for the residents of the United States, as the eclipse will not be visible from any point on the American continent. Regions like Asia and Western Australia will have better luck, where it can be seen from start to finish, and Europe, Africa, Eastern Australia, and New Zealand will be able to see it partially.
The hours when it will be fully visible will depend on the region you are in. If you keep reading, you will be able to find out the exact dates and times for regions such as Perth in Australia, Mumbai in India, Cairo, or Cape Town. In addition, since it will not be able to be seen in America, and many other regions will also have some difficulties, it can be broadcast live on official platforms, so it could also be a good plan to spend the morning, afternoon, or evening (depending on where you are).
Total lunar eclipse
It is an astronomical phenomenon that occurs when the planet Earth is positioned between the Sun and the Moon, blocking sunlight and casting its shadow on the Moon. This is when the so-called atmospheric refraction occurs, as sunlight filters and refracts through Earth’s atmosphere, scattering the blue light and allowing the red to pass through. It is for this reason that the Moon appears with that reddish color, resulting in the phenomenon of the “Blood Moon”.
This phenomenon does not occur so easily; in fact, only 2 are expected this year 2025. One already took place last March, specifically on August 14th. The next one (and it is believed to be the last) will occur on September 7, 2025. The drawback of this type of phenomena is that they are not always completely visible, or they are not visible from all parts of the world. This is the case for this second Blood Moon and the United States. Unfortunately, it will not be visible from any point in the American continent, as the Moon will be located below the horizon.
However, it can be seen live through official media broadcasts. Other regions of the planet will be luckier this time, such as West Australia, where it can be seen from beginning to end. Other places like Europe, Africa, West Australia, and New Zealand will see it partially.
Where and when can it be seen in its entirety?
Grab paper and a pen and take note, because the dates and times vary depending on the region you are in.
- Perth, Australia: 1:30 to 2:52 a.m. AWST on Monday, Sept. 8, 2025.
- Mumbai, India: 11:00 p.m. IST on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025, to 12:22 a.m. IST on Monday, Sept. 8, 2025.
- Cairo: 8:30 to 9:52 p.m. EEST on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025.
- Cape Town, South Africa: 7:30 to 8:52 p.m. SAST on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025.
Those times are for totality, which will last a full 82 minutes between 5:30 and 6:52 p.m. GMT. About 75 minutes will pass between the main event and the partial eclipse that precedes totality and then returns to full brightness.
