If you are a recipient of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) awarded by the Social Security Administration (SSA) in the United States, you will receive double payments this October and November 2025. This does not constitute a double payment per se, but rather is due to the rules that govern the Social Security payment schedule. The 7.4 million people who receive SSI funds in the United States, including elderly and disabled individuals, will receive this kind of advance payment even in January 2026, whose SSI will arrive on December 31, but the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will arrive on January 1.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
As stated on its website, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is one of the monthly social benefits aimed at helping people with disabilities and adults over 65 who have little or no income. It is a payment that depends, among other things, on the housing situation, the income received, and the assets owned by the beneficiary.
The eligibility requirements stipulate that the applicant’s salary cannot exceed $2,019 per month. The average amounts received by beneficiaries in 2025 are:
- Individual applicants: maximum of $967.
- Married couple: $1,450.
According to the data, around 7.4 million people receive this assistance in the United States, including children with disabilities, who may also be eligible.
Social Security Benefits Payment Program
As a general rule, the monthly payment of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is made at the beginning of the month, so that beneficiaries can access it and meet their financial needs. However, payments are subject to the schedule established by Social Security, so they may vary. If the 1st falls on a holiday or weekend, the SSA proceeds to advance the payment to the first business day, even if that means making two payments in the same month. This is what happened in September: September 1 was Labor Day – a federal holiday – and it fell on the first Monday of the month, so beneficiaries received the monthly payment for September on August 29 (the nearest standard business day).
Double Payment in October
This process will be repeated in October 2025: November 1 falls on a Saturday, so the monthly payment for the month will be moved up to the nearest business day, October 31. Now this is a real trick or treat! This kind of double payment will leave many Americans with a total income of $2,900 for October. However, they should not forget that this is actually the payment for November, and throughout the month they will not receive any other income from the SSA.
More double payments at the end of the year?
Like a Christmas gift, December will also be a month of double payment, receiving both the regular monthly payment for the month and the one corresponding to January 2026, since the first day of 2026 falls on New Year’s Day, a federal holiday. In addition, beneficiaries should take into account that the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will have already been applied to that payment.
The official COLA figure was expected to be announced on October 15, but the date has been postponed to next Friday, October 24, 2025. It is expected to be around 2.8%, which would bring the maximum SSI income to about $1,490. However, we will need to wait a few days to be able to provide exact figures.
