Winter storms have arrived in the United States, and the National Weather Service issued warnings in 6 states between Sunday, December 7, and Monday, December 8, when up to 12 inches of snow were expected to fall. This alert affected states such as Alaska, Illinois, Michigan, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wyoming, and there were even warnings of winter storms with flooding, avalanches, and mudslides in the Pacific Northwest. South Carolina and Virginia also received alerts for snowfall of up to 5 inches.

December 7 and 8 were marked on the calendar as key dates when the National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings. This alert was issued for six states where up to 12 inches of snow were expected. The six highlights were Alaska, Illinois, Michigan, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wyoming. According to the National Weather Service, snowfalls of 8 to 12 inches were expected in cities like Elfin Cove and Pelican, while cities like Kale and Port Alexander would see 3 to 5 inches, along with winds of more than 40 miles per hour.

Changes in weather patterns

According to meteorologists, the northeastern Pacific should prepare for winter storms with flooding, avalanches, and mudslides. According to the National Weather Service, “A pattern change is bringing colder temperatures and strong offshore winds spreading south over the weekend. This pattern, combined with prolonged moisture, is producing a heavy snow accumulation for Haines. Periods of moderate to heavy snow continue over the Icy Strait corridor due to the Arctic front moving south of the Hoonah – Juneau area. The next band of heavier precipitation is expected to pass on Sunday morning.”

Where were the heaviest snowfalls expected?

The NWS warned that the heaviest snowfalls would be seen in Alaska. Up to 10 inches of snow were expected in the Teton and Gros Ventre mountains in Wyoming, while Central and West Chippewa Counties in Michigan would experience snowfalls of up to 6 inches. “During the lake effect snow, weather can vary from locally heavy snow bands to dry conditions just a few miles away. Visibilities can also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions,” the NWS said in a statement.
