The Government of Brazil reported the tragic news of a fatal accident involving a young Brazilian woman in Indonesia. The 26-year-old Brazilian tourist fell into a volcano crater in East Java. This is the active Rinjani volcano, where the tourist decided to make a dangerous hiking excursion. After being left behind by her group due to tiredness, she rushed 500 meters deep, getting trapped. After 4 days of rescue work, nothing could be done for her life.

Rinjani volcano, Indonesia

Located in the Asian Southeast, Indonesia is one of the most recognized countries for its beaches, volcanoes and fauna -like the Komodo dragon, tigers and orangutans-. With capital in Jakarta, it is home to 281.2 million people. It is one of the most famous tropical destinations, with attractions such as the island of Bali, the routes through temples, its animals, its volcanoes and beautiful showy parts of routes and walks by magical trails.

One of the best known islands in Indonesia is the island of Lombok. It is there where the active volcano Gunung Rinjani, or Rinjani. It has an altitude of 3,726 meters, and is the second highest in all of Indonesia. One of the activities most chosen and recommended by lovers of hiking and trekking, is the excursion to this volcano. Not only is it the second highest and most active, but on its way you can find truly dangerous stretches even for the most expert.

Tragic accident

On June 20, the young Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old Brazilian tourist, lost her life on an excursion to this volcano. He met with a group led by a guide who, after seeing the fatigue of the young woman, recommended that she stop to rest while the rest of the group followed the march. After being left alone, she fell through a steep area 500 meters deep.

Rescue work

Although the authorities told the girl’s family that she was being cared for, they told the Brazilian media that this was not the case. Thanks to a location drone, it was known that the young woman was still missing and had moved from the last place where she had been located. The weather conditions worsened the search efforts, which were even involving some fifty people. An attempt was also made to include a helicopter in the search, but weather conditions did not allow it. It took four days before there was any sign of Juliana.

Thanks to a drone, they located her lifeless body in a rocky area of difficult access at a depth of 500 meters. It was not easy for the rescuers, who had to climb extreme terrain and unfavorable weather conditions to reach the girl. The National Park route has been closed with no opening date at the moment. It has been closed from the Pelawangan Sembalun area to the summit. This measure is intended to prevent a repetition of the event, although it is not sufficient.

The authorities make a statement

Both Indonesian and Brazilian authorities, as well as the young woman’s family, issued statements with the news, offering their condolences. President Lula da Silva wanted to join in by posting the following tweet on his X profile: “I received with great sadness the news of the death of Juliana Marins after a fall while climbing the Rinjani volcano. Our diplomatic and consular services in Indonesia will continue to provide full support to her family at this time of great sorrow. I would like to express my solidarity with her family, a solidarity that, I am sure, also extends to all the Brazilian people. May God give them comfort”.

Even if we consider ourselves experienced hikers, it is important to choose accessible routes that do not put our integrity at risk, especially when we are in an unknown country.
