Have you ever wanted to move to a secluded village where it’s just you, nature and a couple of neighbors? Well, you can make that dream come true in the United States. This is the town of Lost Springs, located in Wyoming, in Converse County. This county has 13,000 inhabitants, a figure much higher than the population of Lost Springs, considered one of the least populated in the United States. According to the U.S. Census, Lost Springs has only 6 inhabitants!

After the closing of Rosin coal mine in 1930, its inhabitants were abandoning it until reaching the current population. No children are currently counted in the town, but if there are, the nearest high school is a 30 minute drive away, Douglas High School.

Lost Springs

It is a city located in the County of Converse, in the state of Wyoming in the United States. It is within the list of the 4 least populated places in the country, having only one inhabitant in the 2000 census. At the present time, the United States Census has registered 6 adults. The origin of this city occurred almost by chance. It was first settled in the 1880s. Lost railroad workers began arriving, unable to find the springs that appeared on maps, and they all ended up at the same geographic point.

This is how the town was baptized Lost Springs. In 1911, there were 200 inhabitants that populated it, and it was when it was declared and recognized as a city. The main economic activity was the Rosina coal mine, where most of the inhabitants worked. After the closing of the mine, the inhabitants gradually abandoned the town, reducing its population even more.

It is not an abandoned city

The total population of Converse County is approximately 13,000 people – only 6 of whom are from Lost Springs. It’s not a large city, nor is it overcrowded, but it has a charm that many cities would pay for. What would be the basics of any city? A bar, a store or supermarket and a school, right?

Lost Springs has nothing to envy to other cities. It has a bar called Lost Bar (a simple but very logical name). In addition, it also has a small grocery and supply store, available for locals, visitors or travelers passing through. As for the school, the nearest public high school is about a 30 minute drive, less than some students in much more populated cities. In 2014, they sadly dismissed the last post office, which closed for obvious reasons.

The least populated cities in the United States

The United States has 4 cities that are considered the least populated in the country.

  • Lost Springs, Wyoming. Although in the 2020 census it registered only one inhabitant, it currently has 6.
  • Hobberts Gore, Maine. This is a town with only 1 resident. Although living this way in the long run may have disadvantages, it would be a gift to not have annoying neighbors, pollution or noise when waking up in the morning.
  • Erving’s Location, New Hampshire. The number of inhabitants of this city is not the same depending on the sources, but very low figures are estimated.
  • Monowi, Nebraska. This is the most curious case of all. It has only one inhabitant, Elsie Eiler, who is mayor, owner of the town tavern and librarian.

What do you think about these cities? Would you like to live in a city or town where there are hardly any inhabitants, or do you prefer to live in more populated places, with social atmosphere, noise and activity in the streets?
