The United States Congress has approved one of the last measures of President Donald Trump’s proposed One Big Beautiful Bill Act. According to the White House, taxes will be eliminated for seniors and retirees in order for them to enjoy their retirement. Similarly, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has sent a mailing to all beneficiaries communicating this new measure, which has generated outrage from conservatives and former Social Security workers.
According to Frank Bisignano, Commissioner of Social Security, this is a significant advance for the economy and the quality of life of seniors in the United States. The White House relies on the Council of Economic Advisers to reaffirm its position, while other voices have been raised in disbelief. Kathleen Romig, former Social Security counselor, stated that she had never seen such a political statement from the Administration, as did Jeff Nesbit and Frank Pallone, who find it incredible that Trump has manipulated Social Security communications in this way.
One Big Beautiful Bill Act
This new bill proposed by Donald Trump’s Administration and approved by the Senate on July 3, 2025, brings with it a remarkable number of changes that will affect the U.S. economy. Despite the amount of benefits that Trump claims this new measure will bring, the reality is that it will be based on cuts that will plunge the country into an even greater debt than the one they are facing.
There are many points that reform this new law, and some of the ones that Trump is most proud of include reducing SNAP access to 2 million of children or eliminating Medicaid to 11,8 million people. Despite announcing this new decree as the salvation of a country, the reality is that it will mean the opposite. This measure aims to cut taxes for those who earn the most, reduce social spending, tighten immigration policies, and reduce health care, among many others.
Social Security and the new law
Throughout the existence of the Social Security Administration (SSA), it has always been impartial with the measures taken, at least in a public manner. Regardless of the force in power, it has never pronounced itself in favor or against the measures taken or the consequences they might entail. However, and against all odds, the administration that in theory watches over the social equity of the population has broken its silence for the first time. Regarding the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill, it has stated that it is “a historic piece of legislation that provides long-overdue tax relief to millions of older Americans”.
Unsurprisingly, this has provoked reactions from both the opposing side and former Administration workers, who are incredulous. Frank Bisignano, the Security Commissioner, stated in a press release that “By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trump’s promise to protect Social Security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement they have earned”.
One Big Beautiful lie?
Although the White House insists on defending that this is a tax elimination, the reality is that it is a modification of the eligibility thresholds. In fact, people over the age of 65 will be able to benefit from a tax deduction of $6,000 per individual application and $12,000 if it is a joint application. But, be careful, only people with incomes below $175,000 (individual) or $250,000 (couple) will be eligible. In addition, it is only a deduction with 2 years of validity, from 2026 to 2028. Many well-known voices have spoken out against Social Security’s reaction to this White House deception.
Jeff Nesbit, who worked as an SSA official for Republican and Democratic presidents, stated that ”The agency has never issued such a blatant political statement. The fact that Trump and his minions have done this is unconscionable.” Likewise Frank Pallone, a Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee stated that “This email went to all Social Security subscribers and every word of it is a lie”.
