If there is one thing that characterizes China, it is that when it sets a goal, it achieves it, and moreover, in record time. While the rest of the countries in the world continue to go around in circles to avoid taking responsibility for the ecological and energy transition towards the use of cleaner energy, China has already taken many steps forward. Hand in hand with the company Mingyang Smart Energy, the country has put into operation a 20 MW offshore wind turbine, with blades 128 meters long and 242 meters high, making it the largest in the world. This turbine is located offshore in Hainan Province, China.

The location was not chosen at random, but rather it is an area where the benefits of ideal wind speeds are maximized, and with a distance from the continental shelf that favors its proper functioning. However, after putting it into operation in August 2024, the size of the turbines is affecting regional climate patterns and the immediate microclimate. Researchers are analyzing the situation, as the use of renewable energy must be respectful of nature and also of the local climate conditions.

Giant offshore wind turbine

Among many other things, China is characterized by its determination. In just a few years, it has gone from being one of the most polluting powers to being one of the countries that uses the most renewable energy. On August 28, 2024, it commissioned a giant offshore wind turbine. This is a design, development, and production by the company Mingyang Smart Energy, with 20 MW, blades measuring 128 meters, and a height of 242 meters.

It is the largest turbine in the world, capable of supplying power to 96,000 homes each year. To find it, one must travel to Hainan Province, China, which was not chosen randomly. This region maximizes the benefits of ideal wind speeds, as well as providing the necessary distance from the continental shelf to ensure its proper functioning.

What issue is there with the turbine?

The design and operation features of the turbine are unprecedented. According to experts, each of the turbine blades is capable of capturing more wind energy than ever, covering an area larger than 2 football fields. This design reduces the space needed for wind farms, and still produces the same amount of energy with fewer turbines. However, not everything surrounding this design is positive. According to experts, the size of the turbine is affecting the immediate microclimate and local wind patterns. These unforeseen environmental effects generate changes in wind speed and temperatures.

Aspects to consider

The Mingyang turbine has been a resounding success, not only benefiting the environment but also the global community, stabilizing the economy through sustainability. It is not the first time a wind turbine has been installed offshore, but it is the first of this size. For this reason, the consequences it could have on the wind dynamics in that region were not accounted for. This is why experts have highlighted the need for more thorough environmental assessments regarding new designs for renewable energy. What is the point of using a wind energy supply if the structure itself is harming the local climate?

What now?

The patterns of my bird observation, marine systems, and changes in coastal climates are being investigated by experts in order to measure the impact and find solutions. This turbine, specifically designed for areas where typhoons are prevalent, is built to withstand gusts of up to 79.8 m/s, according to the official website of the company Mingyang. Although the benefits of providing a completely renewable wind energy source are immeasurable, experts warn of the need to study its long-term effects. We will have to wait for the analyses of the experts, and above all, for what the proposed solution will be.
